By sending only uncased movements Waltham were able to get around the duties payable on imported gold and silver cases. Dennison not only knew Bedford well he also knew all the senior management at Waltham in the USA, and so it was arranged that Waltham movements would be shipped to the UK in bulk and would be cased by Dennison in Birmingham and sold into the UK market. So Waltham opened an office in London under the management of Alfred Bedford.
Shortly after the company was set up the American economy suffer a big recession and Waltham found that they were massively over producing.
At this point Dennison changed direction once again and founded the Dennison Watch Case Company with its Sun, Moon and Star cases usually accompanied by the ALD trademark. Even after the original company went bankrupt in 1857 Dennsion had stayed on as manager for the relaunched company before leaving to set up the Tremont Watch Company and subsequently after moving to the UK the Anglo-American Watch Company which in turn became the English Watch Company in 1874. Dennison had been one of the founders of Waltham back in 1850. The answer is perhaps more simple than might be thought. Why is it that there are so many Walthams in the UK compared to all the other well known American watch makers? After all Elgin made 55 million watches and there are very few of these in comparison to Walthams. They produced just over 35 million watches. Waltham continued in business until 1957 and like many companies had several different names, owners and directors during their history. Dennison’s concept was effectively the invention of conveyor belt mass production, although Henry Ford was to claim that honour (but only after he had visited the Waltham factory). Dennison had come up with the concept of making all watch parts by machine so that they would be interchangeable and Howard created many machines to do just that but they found it was not going to be as easy as they thought as each watch still required individual adjustment. A few years later the factory at Waltham, Massachusetts was built. Waltham, or The American Waltham Watch Co., was originally founded in 1850 by Davis, Dennison and Howard - great names in the history of American watch making.
